Open Set - Open Set

A film set is built outdoors, not inside a studio. It can be built on the grounds of a film studio, known as a back lot, or on general land reserved for filming. For example, sets of post towns and castles on highways are built for the filming of Japanese period dramas, and miniature cityscapes and harbors are created on vast premises for science fiction and war movies.

Some are dismantled after filming is finished, while others are built as permanent facilities from the start with a view to using them in a variety of productions in mind. For example, in Japan, the main street of Ginza, Tokyo, was built on the grounds of Nikkatsu Studios and was used for many action movies. The huge castle gate and castle set of Toei Kyoto Studios, known as Toei Castle, was used in many productions and now decorates a corner of the theme park called Toei Uzumasa Movie Park.

スタジオ内ではなく、屋外に建造される映画撮影用のセット。建てられる場所はバックロットback lotとよばれる撮影所内の敷地であったり、あるいは撮影のために用意された一般の土地を使うこともある。たとえば日本の時代劇映画の撮影のために、街道の宿場町や城郭のセットが建てられたり、またSF映画や戦争映画などのために、ミニチュアによる街並みや港湾などが、広大な敷地内に製作される。

　撮影終了後に解体してしまうものもあれば、始めからさまざまな作品への利用を考慮して、常置の施設として建造されるものもある。日本の例では、日活撮影所の敷地内に東京・銀座のメイン・ストリートが建設され、数々のアクション映画などに利用された。また東映城とよばれた東映京都撮影所の巨大な城門や城郭のセットは、数多くの作品に使用された後、現在は東映太秦(うずまさ)映画村と称するテーマパークの一角を彩っている。
