According to the definition of the International Council on Folk Music in 1954, folk music is the product of musical traditions that have arisen from the process of oral transmission, and is the product of (1) a flow that connects the past and the future, (2) various transformations that have arisen from the creative impulse of an individual or group, and (3) music that has lived in a form determined by the choices of a community. Some are rudimentary in communities that have no connection to existing music, and some are the works of specific composers that have been adopted into the living oral traditions of a community, but they are always characterized by being reorganized, recreated, and changing within the community.
