A set of 14 operettas written between 1871 and 1896, with librettos and lyrics by British playwright WS Gilbert and music by British composer AS Sullivan. The theatre built by Richard D'Oyly Carte with the profits from Sullivan's early works was called the Savoy Theatre in 1881, and this became the main venue for performances thereafter, hence the name "Savoy Opera." However, as dialogue without music appears frequently, strictly speaking they should be called operettas. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
