A legendary figure from the Hata clan, a clan of immigrants. According to the "Nihon Shoki," he served Emperor Yuryaku, and when the emperor was about to execute the innocent wooden fighter Tsugeno Mita, he played the koto and sang to make the emperor realize his mistake. He also presented the emperor with silk and silk fabrics, which he received in great abundance, and so he was given the surname Utsumasa.
