Tachibanayama

Japanese: 立花山 - たちばなやま
Tachibanayama

This mountain is located in the northwest of Fukuoka Prefecture, on the border between Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City and the towns of Shingu and Hisayama in Kasuya County. It is 367 meters above sea level and is composed mainly of granodiorite and Sangun metamorphic rock. It is a strategic military location at the northern entrance to the Fukuoka Plain, and the ruins of a castle on the summit were built by Otomo Sadatsugu in 1330 (Gentoku 2), and were known as the "fortress of Chikuzen." The primeval camphor forest in the surrounding area is famous as the northernmost forest of giant trees that grows naturally in the area, and was designated a Special Natural Monument in 1955 (Showa 30). It offers a great view from the summit, has well-maintained hiking trails, and is included in the Genkai Quasi-National Park. Mandarin oranges are grown near the foot of the mountain.
