1841‐1911 Egyptian military officer. Also known as 'Arabi Pasha. Born the son of a prominent man in the village of Harriyya Razna, Sharqiya Governorate, Lower Egypt, he enlisted in the army in 1854 and became an officer in 1858. In 1879 he was promoted to colonel, during which time he organized a secret military group of Egyptian officers, helped to found the Watan Party in the same year, which aimed for Egyptian independence and constitutionalism, and later led a national movement called the Arabi Movement, which was named after him, and became Minister of War in 1881.
