An Austrian Mozart scholar whose name is remembered in the Köchel number. A graduate of the University of Vienna, he was also known as a researcher of botany and mineralogy, but what made him immortal was the publication of Chronologischthematisches Verzeichnis sämtlicher Tonwerke WAMozarts (Chronologischthematisches Verzeichnis sämtlicher Tonwerke WAMozarts) in 1862. Created through thorough research and organization of the vast number of original sources for Mozart's works, Köchel's Mozart catalog made it easier to identify the composer's works, which had been difficult until then, and provided detailed information about his works, becoming a model for subsequent composer catalogs.

〈ケッヘル番号〉にその名を残しているオーストリアのモーツァルト研究家。ウィーン大学出身で，植物学･鉱物学の研究家としても知られたが，その名を不朽にしたのは，1862年に刊行した《モーツァルト全音楽作品年代順主題目録Chronologischthematisches Verzeichnis sämtlicher Tonwerke W.A.Mozarts》である。膨大な数にのぼるモーツァルトの作品の原資料の徹底的な調査研究整理によって作成されたこのケッヘルのモーツァルト作品目録は，それまで困難であったこの作曲家の作品の確認を容易にし，作品に関する情報を詳細に提供しているもので，以後の作曲家作品目録のモデルとなった。
