...In 1967, a constitutional amendment by referendum gave civil rights to Aborigines. The Gorton government, which proposed liberal policies such as reducing military intervention in Vietnam and strengthening cultural subsidies, collapsed in 1971 due to the defection of Defence Minister John Malcolm Fraser, who would later become Prime Minister. The conservative tide of decline continued unabated, and in December 1972, Whitlam's Labor government was born for the first time in 23 years. Within the first month of the new government, China was recognised (a trade agreement was concluded the following year) and intervention in Vietnam was abolished. ...
