Arabis glabra; tower mustard

Japanese: ハタザオ(旗竿) - ハタザオ(英語表記)Arabis glabra; tower mustard
Arabis glabra; tower mustard
A biennial plant of the Brassicaceae family. It is widely distributed from the temperate zone to the subtropical zone of the Northern Hemisphere. It grows in sunny areas of mountains and fields throughout Japan, as well as in sandy areas on the coast. The taproot is white and slender, and goes straight into the ground. Only one stem stands upright like a pole, and only the lower part is hairy, and it usually does not branch. The basal leaves are oblanceolate and spread out in a rosette shape, and together with the lower stem leaves, both sides have forked and star-shaped hairs. The upper stem leaves are lanceolate and glabrous, and the base is arrowhead-shaped, embracing the stem. In early summer, a long and slender raceme is formed at the apex of the stem, and many small yellowish-white cruciform flowers are produced. The fruit is a long and slender silique 4 to 5 cm long, and when ripe, the skin splits in two to release the seeds.
