... After the upheaval of the Meiji Restoration, rental bookstores regained their vitality, but around 1883, as print books became available at low prices, their numbers began to decline. Instead, rental bookstores focusing on academic books, translated books, and new novels, such as Irohaya Rental Book Store (1886-1913) in Kanda, Tokyo, appeared in various places. Ikesei in Ushigome, Tokyo, is said to have survived through the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods, operating until around 1931. After the Taisho period, there were some unique ones, such as Dokuritsusha in Sapporo, which collected many socialist books, but most focused on popular novels and also ran second-hand bookstores. ...

…　明治維新の動乱後，活気を取り戻した貸本屋も1883年ころを境にして，活版本が安価に出回るようになり減少するが，代わって東京神田のいろは屋貸本店(1886‐1913ころ)など学術書，翻訳書，新小説を中心とした貸本屋が各地に現れた。また，東京牛込の池清（いけせい）は江戸，明治，大正とひとり生き続け1931年ころまで営業したという。大正以降は，社会主義的書物を多く集めた札幌の独立社など異色のものもあるが，多くは大衆小説を中心にして古本屋の兼業であった。…
