Valencia Island (English spelling)

Japanese: バレンシア[島]（英語表記）Valencia Island

An island located in the southwest of Ireland, at the westernmost point of the southern coast of Dingle Bay. It is 11 km long, 3 km wide, and has an area of 26 km2. There are mountains about 250 m above sea level in the north and west. The population is about 900. Valencia was named by Spanish pirates who used to base themselves here, and in Irish it is called Dairbhre (meaning "oak forest"). In the mid-17th century, O. Cromwell, the Englishman who conquered Ireland, drove out the Spanish and established a garrison here to protect the west coast from plunder.

アイルランド島南西部，ディングル湾の南岸最西端に位置する島。全長11km，幅3km，面積26km2，北部と西部に標高250mほどの山がある。人口約900。バレンシアとは，かつてここを根拠地としていたスペイン人の海賊がつけた名で，アイルランド語ではダレリーDairbhre(〈オークの森〉の意)と呼ばれる。17世紀半ばには，アイルランドを征服したイギリスのO.クロムウェルがスペイン人を追い払い，西海岸を略奪から守るためここに守備隊の基地を置いた。
