A city in the southeastern part of Bahia State, on the central east coast of Brazil. It is a port city overlooking the Atlantic Ocean's Ilheus Bay, about 220 km south-southwest of the state capital, Salvador, and is close to the mouth of the Cachoeira River. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1532. With the cacao-growing region behind it, it is one of the world's leading cacao shipping ports, and also exports cacao butter, Brazilian ivory palm, and timber. It is connected to Salvador by road, and a railway line extends to the cacao-growing region. Population: 223,352 (1991 estimate). ブラジル中部東岸,バイア州南東部の都市。州都サルバドルの南南西約 220km,大西洋のイリェウス湾にのぞむ港湾都市で,カショエイラ川河口に近い。 1532年ポルトガル人が建設。背後にカカオ栽培地帯を控え,世界有数のカカオ積出港となっており,ほかにカカオ脂,ブラジルゾウゲヤシ,木材などを積出す。サルバドルと道路で結ばれ,カカオ栽培地帯へ鉄道が延びる。人口 22万 3352 (1991推計) 。
