[1] An old county name in Settsu Province (Osaka Prefecture). It was called "Suminoe" in the old days, and "Sumiyoshi" was used from the early Heian period onwards. In 1871 , a part of Sakai Prefecture was transferred to Otori County in the former Izumi Province, and in 1896, it was merged into Higashinari County. [2] One of the administrative districts of Osaka City. It is located on the right bank of the Yamato River, at the southern end of the Kamimachi Plateau. It was established as a ward in 1925. It is connected to the Hanwa Line, Nankai Main Line, Nankai Koya Line, Hankai Electric Tramway Hankai Line and Kamimachi Line, and has developed into a representative residential area in the southern part of the city. In 1974 , Suminoe Ward was divided. [3] The name of a place in the northwest of Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City. Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine is located there. [一] 摂津国（大阪府）の古郡名。古くは「すみのえ」と呼称され、「すみよし」の呼称は平安初期以降。明治四年（一八七一）の廃藩置県により堺県に属する一部が旧和泉国の大鳥郡に移され、同二九年東成郡に合併された。三韓との往来などに利用された古代の要津。→「すみのえ（住吉）」の語誌。※伊勢物語（１０Ｃ前）六八「すみよしの郡、すみよしの里、すみ吉の浜をゆくに、いとおもしろければ」[二] 大阪市の行政区の一つ。大和川の右岸、上町台地の南端に位置する。大正一四年（一九二五）区制。阪和線、南海本線・南海高野線、阪堺電気軌道阪堺線・上町線が通じ、市南部の代表的住宅地として発展。昭和四九年（一九七四）住之江区を分区。[三] 大阪市住吉区北西部の地名。住吉大社がある。[四] 「すみよしたいしゃ（住吉大社）」の略。※古今（905‐914）雑上・九一七「住吉とあまはつぐともながゐすな人忘草おふといふなり〈壬生忠岑〉」[五] 「すみよしものがたり（住吉物語）」の略。※枕（１０Ｃ終）二一二「物語はすみよし、うつぼ」
