Hasegawa Tenkei

Japanese:
Hasegawa Tenkei

Critic and English literature scholar. His real name was Seiya. He was born in Niigata Prefecture. He graduated from the Literature Department of Tokyo Senmon Gakko (now Waseda University). He joined Hakubunkan and worked on editing the magazine "Taiyo". He also wrote literary criticism, and developed innovative theories such as the need to bring scientific methods into literature. He published works such as "Art in the Age of Disillusionment" (1906) and "The Sorrow of Exposing Reality" (1908), and played a role in promoting naturalism, which arose after the Russo-Japanese War. However, he studied in England from 1910 to 1912, and after returning to Japan, he gradually switched from his critical activities to working in the management of a publishing company, while also focusing on research into modern English literature and psychoanalysis. His books include "Naturalism" (1908) and "Literature and Psychoanalysis" (1930).
