A poet of the mid-Heian period. His real name was Tachibana Nagayasu. His father was Higo no Kami Tachibana Mototaka. He was later adopted by his older brother Tametaka. His Buddhist name was Yuin, and later Noin. He was also called Kosobe Nyudo. He is one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets of the Middle Ages. He was a government official from Monjosho, but became a monk in his late 20s. According to his family anthology, Noin Hoshishu, it seems that the death of his lover was the catalyst for his decision. He studied waka poetry from Fujiwara Nagayoshi from a young age, and participated in the "Kanpaku Sadaijin Yorimichi Utaawase" (Poetry Contest of the Minister of State and Left Yorimichi) in 1035 (Chogen 8) and the "Dairi Utaawase" (Poetry Contest of the Imperial Palace) in 1049 (Eisho 4), playing a leading role among the poets of his time, especially those of the Zuryo class. He was also a central figure in the movement for enthusiasts that began to emerge during this period. He loved to travel, and is strongly associated with the image of a wandering poet. He visited Mutsu twice, Totomi (Shizuoka), Mino (Gifu), Iyo (Ehime), Mimasaka (Okayama), and other places, but he often relied on the provincial governors he knew and was friends with. When he went to Mutsu, he wrote a poem, "Though I left the capital with the mist, the autumn wind blew at Shirakawa Barrier," which became widely known and later influenced Saigyo and others. His name appears in a poetry contest held by Kayanoin in 1550, but the year of his death is unknown. His works include "Noin Utamakura" and "Gengenshu."
