Barth, John
Born May 27, 1930 in Cambridge, Maryland. American novelist. Earned a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1952, and taught English literature at Pennsylvania State University (1953-65), the State University of New York (1965-73), and his alma mater. In his works, he produced experimental works that explored philosophical themes, using highly conscious techniques such as elaborate parody and intricate plots. In his works, he expressed a nihilistic view of humanity through sharp satire and vulgar humor. His works include The Floating Opera (56), The End of the Road (58), The Sot-Weed Factor (60), Chimera (72, National Book Award), Letters (79), Sabbatical (82), and the short story collection Lost in the Funhouse (68).

Bass, Randy William

Born March 13, 1954 in Lawton, Oklahoma. American professional baseball player. After playing for the Minnesota Twins, Kansas City Royals, and San Diego Padres in major league baseball, he joined the Japanese professional baseball team Hanshin Tigers in 1983. In his third year with the team in 1985, he won the Triple Crown and the Central League MVP with a batting average of .350, 54 home runs, and 134 RBIs. Thanks to his performance, Hanshin won the league championship for the first time in 21 years and also won the Japan Series. In 1986, he was the leading hitter with a batting average of .389, a Japanese record, and won the Triple Crown for two consecutive years. In the middle of the 1988 season, he returned to Japan to treat his child's incurable disease, and left the team.

アメリカ合衆国のプロ野球選手。大リーグのミネソタ・ツインズ,カンザスシティー・ロイヤルズ,サンディエゴ・パドレスなどに在籍したのち,1983年日本のプロ野球球団阪神タイガースに入団。3年目の 1985年に打率3割5分0厘,54本塁打,134打点で三冠王とセントラルリーグ最優秀選手 MVPを獲得。この活躍で阪神は 21年ぶりにリーグ優勝を果たし,日本シリーズも制覇した。 1986年も日本記録となる打率3割8分9厘で首位打者に輝くなど,2年連続で三冠王となった。 1988年シーズン途中で子供の難病治療のため帰国,そのまま退団した。
