Born: September 27, 1906, Yorkfleet, Yorkshire [Died] April 15, 1984. London. British poet and critic. Lecturer at Tokyo University of Literature and Science from 1931 to 1934. Professor of English Literature at Sheffield University from 1953 to 1971. He studied mathematics at Cambridge University, and later switched to literature. He emphasized the multilayered meaning of poetic words in Seven Types of Ambiguity (1930), and put this into practice in Poems (35) and The Gathering Storm (40). His critiques such as Some Versions of Pastoral (35), The Structure of Complex Words (51), and Milton's God (61) were attempts to develop his original argument in a broader social and historical context. He was a pioneer of scientific analytical criticism, following IA Richards, and a forerunner of the "New Criticism." (→ambiguous) Empson |
