Its official name is Jalapa Enríquez. It is the capital of the state of Veracruz in central Mexico. It is located about 250 km east of Mexico City, on the eastern slope of the southeastern edge of the Mexican Plateau, at an altitude of about 1,430 m. There was an Indian settlement here before the Spanish conquest, and during the colonial period it was known as the place where a trading market for European products brought by Spanish fleets was held once a year. It is currently the commercial and industrial center of a rich agricultural region centered on coffee and tobacco cultivation, and in addition to distributing and processing agricultural products, it is known as a town full of flowers due to its mild climate, and has developed as a resort.
