Jalapa (English spelling)
Its official name is Jalapa Enríquez. It is the capital of the state of Veracruz in central Mexico. It is located about 250 km east of Mexico City, on the eastern slope of the southeastern edge of the Mexican Plateau, at an altitude of about 1,430 m. There was an Indian settlement here before the Spanish conquest, and during the colonial period it was known as the place where a trading market for European products brought by Spanish fleets was held once a year. It is currently the commercial and industrial center of a rich agricultural region centered on coffee and tobacco cultivation, and in addition to distributing and processing agricultural products, it is known as a town full of flowers due to its mild climate, and has developed as a resort. It is the location of the University of Veracruz (1944). There is a railway and road connecting Veracruz and Mexico City. Population: 288,331 (1990 estimate).

Located about 60 km east of the capital city, Guatemala City, in a beautiful valley in the central highlands, at an altitude of about 1,380 m. Blessed with a mild climate, it is the center of a fertile agricultural and pastoral region, where corn, beans, wheat, cattle, pigs, dairy products, etc. are distributed. Chromite ore is produced nearby. A road branching off the Pan-American Highway passes through it. Population 24,173 (1990 estimate).

正式名称はハラパエンリケス Jalapa Enríquez。メキシコ中部,ベラクルス州の州都。メキシコ市の東約 250km,メキシコ高原南東端部の東斜面にあり,標高約 1430m。スペイン征服前からインディオの集落があったところで,植民地時代にはスペイン船団によって年に1度運ばれてくるヨーロッパ製品の取引市が開かれる地として知られた。現在コーヒーとタバコの栽培を中心とする豊かな農業地帯の商工業中心地で,農産物を集散,加工するほか,温和な気候に恵まれ花のあふれる町として知られ,保養地としても発展。ベラクルス大学 (1944) 所在地。ベラクルスとメキシコ市を結ぶ鉄道,道路が通る。人口 28万 8331 (1990推計) 。

グアテマラ南東部の都市。同名県の県都。首都グアテマラ市の東約 60km,中央高地の美しい谷にあり,標高約 1380m。温和な気候に恵まれた肥沃な農牧地帯の中心地で,トウモロコシ,豆類,小麦,ウシ,ブタ,酪農製品などの集散が行われる。付近にクロム鉄鉱を産する。パンアメリカン・ハイウェーから分岐する道路が通る。人口2万 4173 (1990推計) 。
