Oshimojo Village

...A town in Shimoina County, southern Nagano Prefecture. In 1957, the three villages of Ogejo, Wago, and Asage merged to form a town. In 1959, it merged with Tomikusa Village. Population 6,565 (1995). It is located on the west bank of the midstream of the Tenryu River, on the southeastern edge of the Kiso Mountains, and its southern end borders Aichi Prefecture. Most of the town area is covered by forests and wilderness, with only a small amount of cultivated land scattered along the Wago River, a tributary of the Tenryu River. The town is primarily run by agriculture and forestry, but with the decline in the agricultural population and the increasing trend toward part-time work, efforts have been made in recent years to introduce industry. It is a treasure trove of folk performing arts, with Niino's Snow Festival (an important intangible folk cultural property), Bon Odori, Wago's Nembutsu Dance, and Waseda dolls being handed down. ...
