Year of death: 21 September 1664 (8 November 1664) Year of birth: September 8, 1589 (October 17, 1589) A Confucian scholar in the early Edo period. His given name was Soshin, and Irin'an was his pen name. He initially studied Buddhism and became a monk, but later switched to Confucianism and followed the Neo-Confucian school. He served Hosokawa Tadatoshi and Tokugawa Tadanaga, but after returning to Kyoto in 1631 he did not serve them. He was highly regarded for his learning, and on February 2, 1653, as a samurai (ronin), he visited the Imperial Court and lectured Emperor Go-Komyo on "The Doctrine of the Mean." No collection of poems or prose remains, and only the postscript to Oze Hoan's "Taikoki" and the preface to "Warambegusa" remain. The kana-zoshi "Shimizu Monogatari" (1638) is said to have been written by him, but there is no definite proof. <References> Miura Shuko, "Emperor Go-Komyo's Love of Learning and Asayama Irin'an" (Shigaku Zasshi, Vol. 23, No. 4) (Takahashi Fumihiro) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
