A large shared passenger car (→ automobile). It is said that it began in 1830 in England when Goldsworthy Gurney designed a steam-powered stagecoach. In Japan, the first shared car was operated by Nii Shokai, which opened in Kyoto City on September 20, 1903. In Japan, the Road Traffic Law Enforcement Regulations state that it refers to a vehicle with a passenger capacity of 11 or more. There are various types, from microbuses with a capacity of 20 or so people, to large buses with a capacity of over 100 people, and double-decker buses. Depending on the purpose of use, they can be classified as route buses (short distance, long distance; → express bus), tourist buses, postal buses, airport buses, etc. In addition, they can be classified as private or commercial, and by the number of drivers, such as one-man, two-man, or one-two-man. In modern times, the development of internal combustion engines, pneumatic tires, shock absorbers, and improvements to road networks have led to remarkable increases in size and speed, and reliability and comfort (air conditioning, reclining seats, panoramic windows, etc.) in long-distance continuous operation have improved significantly. In recent years, community buses specializing in user convenience and low-floor buses aimed at barrier-free access have become popular. Most are diesel-engine buses that use diesel as fuel, but some use gasoline or liquefied petroleum gas (LP gas). (→ Bus Business)

The capital of Bath and North East Somerset, southwest of England, England. It is located about 20km east-southeast of Bristol, facing the River Avon. It is surrounded by steep hills and is a natural amphitheater. It is said to be one of the most beautiful towns in England, and has appeared in many literary works. It has been known for its hot springs since early times, and a town called Aquae Sulis was founded in the Roman era, and a hot spring resort was built in the latter half of the 1st century. After the Romans left, the hot springs were not used much and the town declined, but in 577 the Saxons occupied the town and built a monastery. In the Norman era, it was granted its first royal charter in 1189, and developed as a market town and a textile center for about five centuries. The hot springs began to be used again from around the end of the 17th century, and the golden age of hot spring resorts began with the visit of Queen Anne in 1702. It is one of the UK's leading resort cities, and is home to many beautiful Georgian-style buildings (see Georgian architecture) as well as St. Peter and Paul's Cathedral (16th century), which is in the late English Gothic style. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1987. Industries such as machinery, electrical equipment, printing and bookbinding, and shoemaking are based here. Population: 90,144 (2001).

A common signal line used for data (signals) exchange within a computer. The signal lines that run inside the central processing unit (CPU) are called internal buses, and a 16-bit CPU has 16 internal buses, and a 32-bit CPU has 32 internal buses, depending on the number of parallel processing bits. The signal lines that connect the CPU to memory, etc. are called external buses, and include an address bus that sends memory address data, and a data bus that exchanges data between the CPU and memory. There are also system buses that act as backbones, connecting the CPU to image processing circuits, output circuits, etc. The input/output (I/O) bus that connects measuring instruments is well known as the IEEE-488 standard bus. It is standardized as a standard for signal exchange. Different peripheral devices require different buses.

[Died] April 25, 1996, Los Angeles, California. American graphic designer and filmmaker. After graduating from the Art Students League of New York, he worked as a freelancer while studying under György Kepes at the City University of New York from 1944 to 1945. He gained attention for his innovative animated title design for the film The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), and subsequently worked on titles for Around the World in Eighty Days (1956), Spartacus (1960), West Side Story (1961), and Escape from the Dead (1961), as well as making use of his graphic sensibility to create promotional films and animated shorts.

Also contributed to the development of secondary education for girls in cooperation with D. Beale. Founded the Women Headmasters' Association and became its first president (1874-94).

イギリス，イングランド南西部，バス・ノースイーストサマセットの行政府所在地。ブリストルの東南東約 20kmにあり，エーボン川に臨む。急峻な丘に囲まれた自然の円形劇場ともいえるところに位置し，イギリスで最も美しい市街をもつ町の一つといわれ，数々の文学作品に登場。早くから温泉の湧出で知られたところで，ローマ時代にアクアエ・スリスと呼ばれる町が建設され，1世紀後半には温泉場もつくられた。ローマ人の撤退後は温泉はあまり利用されず，町も衰退したが，577年サクソン人（ザクセン人）が町を占領し，修道院を建てた。ノルマン朝時代に入って 1189年に最初の勅許状を与えられ，その後約 5世紀の間市場町として，また織物業中心地として発展。17世紀末頃から再び温泉が利用されるようになり，1702年アン女王の訪問により温泉保養地としての黄金時代が始まった。イギリス有数の保養都市で，後期イギリス・ゴシック様式の聖ピーター・ポール聖堂（16世紀）などのほか，ジョージ朝様式の美しい建築物（→ジョージ朝建築）も多く，1987年世界遺産の文化遺産に登録された。機械，電機，印刷・製本，製靴などの工業が立地する。人口 9万144（2001）。

コンピュータ内部でデータ (信号) のやりとりをする場合に使われる共通の信号線をいう。中央処理装置 CPUの内部を走る信号線を内部バスといい，並列処理のビット数に合わせ，16ビット CPUならば 16本，32ビット CPUならば 32本の内部バスをもつ。 CPUとメモリなどを結ぶ信号線を外部バスといい，メモリの番地データを送るアドレス・バス，CPUとメモリの間でデータをやりとりするデータ・バスなどがある。ほかに，CPUと画像処理回路，出力回路などを結んで幹線の役目を果たしているシステム・バスなどもある。計測器を接続する入出力 (I/O) バスは，IEEE-488標準バスとしてよく知られている。信号のやりとりの規格として標準化されている。周辺機器が異なるとバスも異なってくる。

アメリカのグラフィック・デザイナー，映画作家。ニューヨークのアート・スチューデンツ・リーグを経て，1944～45年ニューヨーク市立大学でジョルジ・ケペシュに師事しつつフリーランサーとして活躍。映画『黄金の腕』 (1955) のアニメーションによる新鮮なタイトル・デザインで注目され，以後『80日間世界一周』 (1956) ，『スパルタカス』 (1960) ，『ウエスト・サイド物語』 (1961) ，『栄光への脱出』 (1961) などのタイトルを手がけたほか，グラフィック感覚を生かした PR映画，アニメーション短編をつくった。
