Phaulkon, Constantine

Japanese: フォールコン(英語表記)Phaulkon, Constantine
Phaulkon, Constantine
Born: 1647. Cephalonia, Greece
[Died] June 5, 1688. Ayutthaya. A Greek-British man involved in the Ayutthaya court incident in Thailand. In 1675, he began trading in southern Thailand as an employee of the British East India Company. He gained the trust of King Phra Narai and took control of Thai royal trade, effectively serving as Minister of Finance. He tried to convert the king to Catholicism, but failed. He had long hated the British East India Company, to which he belonged, and in 1687 he confronted the British, trying to promote royal trade through the French East India Company (issued a charter in 1664). He also worked hard to exchange envoys between Ayutthaya and France, and to station French troops there, but was executed by xenophobic Thai aristocrats for intervening in the succession struggle after the death of King Phra Narai. His wife was Japanese, and they had one son.
