Born: September 13, 1860, Laclede, Missouri [Died] July 15, 1948, Washington, DC He was a US Army officer. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1886. He participated in the Indian Expeditionary War and the Spanish-American War, and served as a military attaché in Japan in 1905. He served with the Japanese Army as an observer in the Russo-Japanese War. In 1916, he was the commander of the Mexican expedition against Pancho Villa. When the US entered World War I in 1917, he was appointed commander of the European Expeditionary Force, and after the war, in 1919, he became the first US Army marshal.
