He was a US Army officer. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1886. He participated in the Indian Expeditionary War and the Spanish-American War, and served as a military attaché in Japan in 1905. He served with the Japanese Army as an observer in the Russo-Japanese War. In 1916, he was the commander of the Mexican expedition against Pancho Villa. When the US entered World War I in 1917, he was appointed commander of the European Expeditionary Force, and after the war, in 1919, he became the first US Army marshal. He served as Chief of Staff from 1921 to 1924, when he retired. The American tactical missile "Pershing" is named after him. He is the author of My Experiences in the World War (1931).

A surface-to-surface tactical ballistic missile of the US Army. The Type II was deployed in Europe in December 1982 to counter the Soviet SS-20 missile. Its range was shorter than that of the SS-20, but it used a radar terrain matching guidance system for terminal guidance and boasted high accuracy with a CEP (circular error probability) of 45m. Intermediate-range nuclear forces were completely eliminated by the end of May 1991 under the INF Treaty. Its main specifications are a range of 1,800km, speed of Mach 12, total length of 10.5m, diameter of about 1m, launch weight of 7.2t, propulsion method of solid fuel, warhead power of 5-50kt, and CEP of less than 45m.

アメリカ陸軍の地対地戦術用弾道ミサイル。 II型はソ連のSS-20ミサイルに対抗するため 1982年 12月からヨーロッパに配備された。射程は SS-20より短いが，終末誘導にレーダ地形照合誘導装置を使い，CEP (半数必中界) 45mという高い命中精度を誇った。中距離核戦力 INF全廃条約により 91年5月末までに全廃。主要目は，射程 1800km，速度マッハ 12，全長 10.5m，直径約 1m，発射重量 7.2t，推進方式固体燃料，弾頭威力5～50kt，CEP45m以下。
