Born: September 13, 1860, Laclede, Missouri [Died] July 15, 1948, Washington, DC He was a US Army officer. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1886. He participated in the Indian Expeditionary War and the Spanish-American War, and served as a military attaché in Japan in 1905. He served with the Japanese Army as an observer in the Russo-Japanese War. In 1916, he was the commander of the Mexican expedition against Pancho Villa. When the US entered World War I in 1917, he was appointed commander of the European Expeditionary Force, and after the war, in 1919, he became the first US Army marshal. He served as Chief of Staff from 1921 to 1924, when he retired. The American tactical missile "Pershing" is named after him. He is the author of My Experiences in the World War (1931). Pershing |
