In Japan, it is called emon (clothing folds). In English, it is called drapery, and in French, it is called draperie. In art history, it refers to the folds seen in the clothing of human figures in sculptures and paintings. Although there are characteristics that vary by region and era, there are phenomena that are similar to stylistic changes. For example, in ancient Greek sculpture, the draperies seen in sculptures of the Archaic period are generally highly decorative, with delicate parallel lines flowing down in a regular rhythm (such as the Acropolis in Athens and Kore on the island of Samos).
