A band of walls forming the top of the facade of an ancient Roman building. It was distinguished from the main orders that made up the facade by a cornice and was decorated with pilasters, plaques, and reliefs. The name comes from the fact that the low pilasters were commonly called Attic. Originally, it was a decorative wall intended to hide the slope of the roof and give the facade a square shape, but in palaces and residential buildings from the Renaissance onwards, windows were installed in this wall and a new floor was added. For this reason, the top floor, or attic, also came to be called the attic. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
