This refers to drugs that stimulate the muscarinic receptors, which are the acetylcholine receptors that bind to acetylcholine released from the parasympathetic nerve endings as an excitatory transmitter and transmit the excitation to the effector organ, and produce an effect similar to parasympathetic excitation. Drugs of this type are broadly divided into those that act directly on the receptors, such as acetylcholine, muscarine, pilocarpine, and methacholine, and those that inhibit cholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine released from the nerve endings, resulting in the accumulation of acetylcholine (anticholinesterase drugs).
