A Yamada school koto performer. His real name was Hagiwara Inosuke (1864-1936), and he was later known as Minamoto Ito. He lost his sight at the age of four (by Japanese reckoning), and entered the blind community under the guidance of Omatsu Kengyo of Ise. In 1871 (Meiji 4), he was awarded the rank of Koto and took the surname Hagioka. He initially studied koto under Baba Mise of the Yamada school of Yamase, and in 1874 he became a direct disciple of Yamase Shoin III, and in 1885 was given the stage name Shoka. After his teacher's death, he assisted Yamase Fuku IV, and together with Imai Keimatsu, he represented the Yamase school, and took the stage name Shoin. Since 1887, he has worked at the Tokyo School for the Blind (now the Tsukuba University School for the Blind), and as the head of the so-called blind school school, he has trained Hisamoto Genchi, Saito Shosei, Yamakawa Sonomatsu, and others.
