Born: 1563 in Haarlem
[Died] February 8, 1611. Enkhuizen. Dutch traveler and explorer. Traveled to Goa, India, and after returning home, published a two-volume work on the people and customs of India during his stay (1583-89), which stimulated the enthusiasm of Dutch and British people for traveling to India. In Goa, he witnessed the passage of the Japanese Tensho Embassy to Europe. In an attempt to find the shortest sea route to India, he participated in the Northeast Passage Expedition (94-95) with W. Barents, and wrote a voyage account.
