Hashidoi - Hashidoi

Japanese: ハシドイ - はしどい
Hashidoi - Hashidoi

A deciduous tree of the family Oleaceae (APG classification: Oleaceae). It grows to a height of 5-10 meters. The leaves are opposite, broadly ovate, 6-10 cm long, sharply pointed at the tip, without serrated edges, and have soft fine hairs on the underside. In June and July, it produces panicles 15-25 cm long, and many small white flowers bloom. The corolla is deeply divided into four lobes, the tube is short, and there are two stamens. The fruit is a capsule, narrowly oblong, about 2 cm long, and ripens in autumn into two lobes. It is found in the southern Kuril Islands and along streams in Hokkaido, and distributed from Honshu to Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula. The variety Manshu hasidoi has no hairs on the underside of the leaves and is found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, China, and eastern Siberia. It is planted as a garden tree, and its wood is durable, so it is used for construction and equipment. There are about 20 species of the Candida genus in the Northern Hemisphere.
