Decroly, Ovide
[Born] July 23, 1871. Renée
Died: September 12, 1932, Brussels. Belgian educator, psychologist, and physician. Founder of the Decroly Method. Studied medicine at the University of Gan, and obtained his doctorate in 1896. He studied medicine in Berlin and Paris, and in 1901 established a research institute for retarded children in Brussels. In 1907, he established an experimental school based on the new school philosophy, L'école pour la vie, par la vie, in Ixelles, on the outskirts of Brussels, where he put the Decroly Method into practice. In 1920, he became a lecturer at the University of Brussels, and in 1928, he became a professor there. While lecturing on psychology and pedagogy, he also worked in many fields, such as teaching at the medical school and normal school, and being appointed by the city as an inspector for disabled children. His main work was Le traitement et l'éducation des enfants irréguliers (1925), The Treatment and Education of Special Children.
