…In the Edo period, this document notifies villages of the amount of annual tax determined by local agricultural officials, such as the local magistrate in the Shogunate territory or the county magistrate in the feudal domain. It is also called the onarikawari-tsuke (onari-kawari-tsuke), kano-watsupu (kanou-watsupu), menjo (menjo), or sagefuda (shi-fuda). In some cases, the Shogunate magistrate's office created ledgers called nengu-altsuke (nengu-altsuke) or shi-cho (shi-cho)/gen-sho (gensho), which, together with the nari-ka-go-cho (nari-ka-go-cho) and nengu-kai-sai-mokuroku (nengu-kai-sai-mokuroku), were called the three local ledgers, and were the basic ledgers for collecting annual tax for controlling rural areas. …
