Basidiomycetes, order Matsutake, family Shimejiaceae. Also known as Awabitake (Awatake). They grow in large numbers from spring to autumn on the dead wood and stumps of various broad-leaved trees, and occasionally on the dead wood and stumps of coniferous trees. The cap is 5-15 cm in diameter, shell-shaped or fan-shaped, with a 1-4 cm long, 1-2 cm thick stalk leaning to one side. The surface of the cap is white or gray-brown. The spore print is white or pale purple. It is a delicious edible mushroom distributed throughout Japan. A closely related species is P. cornucopiae , which grows on elm trees. Hohenbuehelia serotina also grows on elm trees, but the cap skin is easy to peel.
