A small evergreen tree of the Rutaceae family with an aromatic scent, it is highly branched and generally hairless. The twigs are cylindrical. The bark is thin and grayish white. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate, compound, 8-15 cm long. There are 3-7 leaflets, oblong or ovate, and the upper surface of the leaf is dark green and glossy. In summer, short axillary and terminal cymes are produced, and a small number of flowers are produced. The flowers are white, fragrant, and about 1.5-2 cm long. The fruit is an oval berry that ripens red, about 1 cm long, and contains 1-2 seeds. It is widely distributed from Amami Oshima to the Ryukyu Islands (often on limestone ground), Taiwan, southern China, Myanmar, India, and Malaysia.
