Hakone crafts - Hakonezaiku

This refers to wooden crafts such as marquetry, which are made as souvenirs around the Hakone hot springs. It is said to have been invented by woodworker Ishikawa Nihei in the mid-19th century. It is made by stacking several pieces of different colored logs, gluing them together with glue, cutting them into rods with a saw, and gluing the rods together vertically. In 1875 (Meiji 8), Kameda Chojiro, a resident of Hatajuku, Hakone-machi, went to Shizuoka and learned the technique of turning the unit patterns of marquetry into continuous patterns and the art of sawing marquetry, which is now mass-produced as a surface decoration for Hakone joinery.

箱根温泉場付近で土産(みやげ)品としてつくられている寄木(よせぎ)細工などの木製細工物をいう。19世紀の中ごろに木地師石川仁兵衛が考案したといわれている。色の違う原木を何枚も重ねて、膠(にかわ)で貼(は)り合わせてから鋸(のこぎり)で棒状に切り、その棒を縦に組み合わせて貼ったものである。1875年（明治8）箱根町畑宿(はたじゅく)の住人亀田長次郎が静岡に行き、寄木技術の単位模様から連続紋様にする技法と挽割(ひきわり)寄木を修得し、いまでは箱根指物(さしもの)の表面加飾として量産化されている。
