It is pronounced "detchosou." It is a type of binding method for Japanese and Chinese books, in which a printed or copied piece of paper is folded in half with the characters facing inward, glue is applied to the outside of the fold near the spine of each piece of paper, and the pieces are then attached to a cover. Some covers are wrapped in a single continuous piece of paper, while others wrap only the spine in a separate piece of paper or silk, and then have separate covers for the front and back. It is characterized by the fact that it is finished using only glue, without using any thread or string. In nechosou, there are two blank pages next to the two pages with characters. In China, it is a typical binding method from the Song dynasty. In Japan, it is seen in manuscripts and woodblock prints from the Heian to Kamakura periods, but because thicker paper is used than in China, both the front and back of the paper are often written or printed on. Because the papers are glued together near the spine of the fold, when the book is opened it looks like a butterfly with its wings spread, and so in China this binding method is called kochosou.
