In this case, gold coins and bullion were called specie. In a broader sense, even if a country's currency is not convertible into gold, if another country has a currency that is guaranteed to be convertible into gold (called gold exchange), and if the exchangeability of that currency is guaranteed between the country's currency and the country's currency at a certain exchange rate, and if the freedom to export and import that currency and the currency issuing system linked to it are maintained, then it is called the gold exchange standard and is included in the gold standard. In this case, the country's currency cannot be directly converted into gold, but its convertibility is indirectly guaranteed through the currency of the other country that is gold exchange.
