Peacock cactus - Peacock cactus

Japanese:
Peacock cactus - Peacock cactus

Succulent plant of the Cactaceae family (APG classification: Cactaceae). A general term for the genus Epiphyllum and the genus Nopalxochia and several related genera and their hybrids. There are several hundred varieties. It has no leaves. The young stems are fleshy and soft, flattened like kelp with wavy sides, and in the valleys of the ridges there are parts called areoles. The areoles are covered with short hairs, but lack spines. The flowers are beautiful large trumpet-shaped flowers that grow from areoles on 2-year-old branches or more and are over 10 cm in diameter. The flower tubes of the Epiphyllum genus are longer than the petals, but those of the Nopalxochia genus are shorter, and the hybrid Peacock Cactus has a shorter tube length due to this influence. The flowers bloom during the day, have a metallic luster, and are available in a wide variety of colors, including red, crimson, magenta, purple, peach, orange, yellow, and white.

The original species is distributed from Mexico to Brazil, but it is common in the tropical forests of Central America, where it grows on trees and rocks. Intergeneric hybridization has been promoted since the 19th century, with N. phyllanthoides Br. et R. and Heliocereus speciosus Br. et R. at the center of this work. Plant in well-drained soil, place in partial shade in summer and full sun in other seasons. In warm areas, it will survive winter without heating. Flowers will grow better if the water is drained in winter. Propagation is by cuttings.
