Typhoons have appeared in Japanese history as far back as the two famous Mongol invasions in 1274 and 1281, but the strongest typhoon in Japanese history is said to be Typhoon Siebold. Of course, it was not named Typhoon Siebold at the time, but was simply called that by later meteorological disaster historians. This typhoon is thought to have grazed the western side of Kyushu on August 9, 1828 (September 17, 1828 in the solar calendar), and may have followed a course similar to that of the typhoon during the Mongol invasion.
