A mountain stream salamander of the Hynobiidae family (illustration). Found in Honshu and Shikoku, it is about 10-19 cm long with a tail that is more than half that length. Males are generally larger than females. Even after metamorphosis, it does not develop lungs and breathes exclusively through its skin. This species and the false hakone salamander O. fischeri found on the Korean peninsula and Primorsky Krai form a single genus. The dorsum of the body is dark brown or black with a reddish orange stripe in the center, but there is a wide variation in body color and markings. It lives around mountain streams at altitudes of 500-2500 m. During the breeding season, both males and females develop horny black claws at the tips of each finger, and the male's hind legs become enlarged and the outer edge of the fifth toe also becomes wider.
