Located in Hakoishihama, Kumihama-cho, Kyotango City, Kyoto Prefecture, this complex archaeological site is primarily from the Yayoi period. An area of 500 meters east to west and approximately 400 meters north to south near the base of the eastern end of the sand spit that separates the Sea of Japan from Kumihama Bay has been designated as a national historic site. The designated name is "Hakoishihama Artifact Containment Site." While much is unknown about the actual site, the site has gained fame due to the presence of early to middle Yayoi pottery, two coin springs, and stemless and stemmed bronze arrowheads that have been unearthed on the surface. Other items collected include fragments of late Jomon pottery, stone arrowheads, polished stone axes, polished stone swords, stone weights, magatama, and tubular beads. A box-shaped stone sarcophagus containing Sueki ware was also discovered, and there are also sites where Hajiki ware, Sueki ware, and coins from the Heian period have been scattered.
