It is an arsenic (As) ore mineral. It corresponds to the artificially created α (alpha)-As 4 S 4. Its heteromorphic relative, pararealgar, corresponds to γ (gamma)-As 4 S 4. The mineral phase corresponding to β (beta)-As 4 S 4 is called beta realgar (high-temperature phase of α, transition point 250°C) in the part with a chemical composition close to As 4 S 4 , and alacranite in the part with a chemical composition close to As 8 S 9 , but there is currently some disagreement regarding the nomenclature of the β-phase-related phase. It occurs in fumarolic deposits, certain shallow to deep hydrothermal deposits, volcanic fumaroles, coal seams, recrystallized dolomite, and borate-containing sedimentary rocks, and forms monoclinic columnar euhedral crystals. The Nishinomaki Mine (closed) in Shimonita-cho, Gunma Prefecture is a famous source of As. It was once found in mercury ore together with oresite (sekiou) at the Nyu Mine (now Taki Town) in Seiwa Village, Taki County, Mie Prefecture (now Taki Town). When heated in air, it gives off toxic white smoke of arsenic trioxide. Its Japanese name comes from the fact that its color resembles a rooster's comb. Its English name is said to come from the Arabic Rahj al ghar (ore powder).
