Sankeien Garden

Japanese: 三渓園 - さんけいえん
Sankeien Garden

This large garden is located in Sannotani, Honmoku, Naka Ward, Yokohama. It was built in 1905 (Meiji 38) by Yokohama businessman Hara Tomitaro (pen name Sankei, 1868-1939). It was opened to the public the following year, and in 1953 (Showa 28) it was transferred to the Sankeien Preservation Society, a foundation, and is open to the public except at the end of the year.

This Japanese garden, covering approximately 58,000 tsubo (approximately 191,400 square meters), was created by taking advantage of the natural topography of mountains and valleys near the coast, and is a natural-style comprehensive garden that incorporates the seascape. The land has been divided so that a pond and hills can be seen on either side, and a three-story pagoda can be seen in front, and structures that were moved from Kansai and Kamakura during the Meiji and Taisho periods have been cleverly arranged. Among the garden's structures are the three-story pagoda of the former Toumyoji Temple from the Muromachi period, the remains of Fushimi Castle (Gekkaden) from the Momoyama period, the Tokugawa family villa Rinshunkaku from the early Edo period, Choshukaku from Nijo Castle, the teahouse Shungusoro of Oda Uraku, and the former Yanohara family residence, a gassho-style house from Hida (all of which are nationally designated Important Cultural Properties). It is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty.
