Bijapur (English spelling)

Japanese: ビジャープル(英語表記)Bijāpur
Bijapur (English spelling)
An ancient city in the north of Karnataka, southwest India. It is the administrative capital of Bijapur district. It is located in the hills about 160 km northeast of Belgaum. It was the capital of the Yadava dynasty until the end of the 13th century, and continued to develop under the Bahmani dynasty. It reached its peak with the establishment of the Adil Shahi dynasty in 1489, and became the central city of the Deccan region and a base for trade in the Indian Ocean. Its palaces and mosques include masterpieces of Islamic architecture in the Deccan, and Gol Gumbaz, the mausoleum of the sixth king, Muhammad, is of the highest standard. Under the protection of the king, Islamic learning and art also flourished, and coins were minted, which were widely used in trade in the Indian Ocean. After being annexed by the Mughal Empire in 1686, the rulers changed from the Hyderabad Kingdom to the Maratha Kingdom, and it rapidly declined. During the British colonial period, it was part of the Bombay State, but in the state reorganization in 1956, it was included in the Mysore (now Karnataka) State as a Kannada-speaking region. The city distributes and processes cotton, tobacco, oilseeds, wheat, and other grains. Population: 186,846 (1991).
