Born: April 10, 1880, Boston [Died] May 14, 1965. Newcastle, Maine. American women's social activist and government official. She worked to improve working conditions for women and factory sanitation facilities in New York, and served as secretary of the Consumers League from 1910 to 1912, and as a member of the New York State Industrial Commission from 1929 to 1933. In 1933, she became Secretary of Labor under the F. Roosevelt administration, becoming the first female cabinet member in American history.
