The most important of these is the class and state theories of Althusser and Nicos Poulantzas, known as the “scientific” Marxists, and Erik Olin Wright, who was heavily influenced by them. The teaching that phenomena should not be reduced to atomistic units but should be understood as an organized set of interrelated elements, the admonition that the overall structure that lies behind directly observable social reality should be grasped, and the claim that structure has multiple layers of depth and surface, all of these were inherited from structuralist theory, but their seriousness was in regarding humanism as an ideology, and promoting empirical research centered on class and state, arguing that historical change can only be understood by grasping the contradictions built into the structure itself. …

…(4)構造主義的社会学　客観主義的アプローチからするラディカル変動の社会学で，社会実在論的，実証主義的，決定論的，法則定立的な性格をもつ。このうち，最も重要なのは，〈科学的〉マルクス主義の異名をもつアルチュセールやプーランツァスNicos Poulantzas，さらにその強い影響を受けたライトErik Olin Wrightたちの階級論と国家論である。現象を原子論的単位に還元することなく，相互連関する諸要素の組織されたセットとしてとらえるべきだという教え，直接観察可能な社会的現実の背後に横たわる全体構造を把握すべきだという訓戒，さらに構造は深層と表層の多層性をもつという主張，これらはいずれも構造主義理論から継承したものであるが，彼らの真面目は人間主義をもってイデオロギーとみなし，歴史的変動は構造そのものの中に内蔵されている矛盾の把握によってしか求められぬとして，階級と国家を中心にした経験的研究を推進したことである。…
