...In the 17th century, G. Galilei confirmed that air is a substance with weight, O. von Guericke conducted experiments on atmospheric pressure (the Magdeburg Hemispheres), and it was recognized that the existence of air is essential for the maintenance of life. The nature of air began to become somewhat clearer. John Mayow (1640-79) then discovered that air is not a single substance, but is composed of chemically active parts (fire air) and inactive parts. In the 18th century, J. Priestley, K. W. Scheele, and others conducted experiments on this fact, and finally, AL Lavoisier (1774) completely proved that "air is a mixture of 20% oxygen and 80% nitrogen, and combustion and respiration occur through the combination of oxygen," which marked the beginning of the development of modern chemistry from the 19th century onwards.

…The 16th-century alchemical chemist and physician Paracelsus believed that combustion was caused by "sulfur spirits" and "saltpeter," and that breathing and combustion were the same phenomenon.
