It was one of the punishments from the Sengoku to Edo period. It was considered the most severe form of capital punishment, and in the Edo period it was imposed on those who murdered their master. The Kojikata Osadamegaki states that the inmate would be paraded around for one day, have a sword cut into both shoulders, and have their blood smeared on a bamboo saw, and be left standing nearby for two days, and if anyone wished to be executed, they could be executed. In the end, the inmate was executed by crucifixion. From the Sengoku to the early Edo period, the inmate was actually killed by being chopped to death with a saw, but it gradually became a formality and became a kind of public display before crucifixion. The place for displaying was the square at the south end of Nihonbashi Bridge, where the inmate was placed in a hole-sharpened box, hung with a shackle, and exposed to the public by fastening a nail to the box. The expropriation of fields, houses, and household goods was also added to this. It was abolished in July 1869 (Meiji 2).
