Meisen is woven near Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture. From the Kyoho era (1716-36), farmers made striped fabrics called Futoori as a side job, and the Bankin Sugiwaibukuro listed it as a production area for Namikinu silk. In the Bunsei era (1818-30), a weaving shop was established and began to rent weaving machines to farmers, and the area developed after that. The kasuri pattern in particular met the public's taste, and other production areas followed suit, and at the peak before the Second World War, the area boasted the largest production of meisen in Japan. Kasuri includes combined kasuri, weft-strip kasuri, and rare kasuri, and is woven using a combination of stencil printing and board-pressing, and many of the designs are ingenious. From the end of the war to the present, demand has decreased due to changes in lifestyle, and production has now shifted to woolen kimono fabric and silk wool kimono fabric for everyday wear, but the kasuri technique has been handed down as is.
