Pure economic theory is a theoretical systematization of the most fundamental problems in economics, while applied economics is the field of research that applies this pure theory to the analysis of specific individual economic problems and the explanation of actual economic phenomena. The above is a very strict definition of applied economics. However, the usual classification of applied economics is that it is a discipline that applies economic theory to the elucidation of real economic problems. The subjects of applied economics are extremely wide-ranging, including the mechanisms that determine the size and structure of a country's economy, the mechanisms of economic fluctuations that cause repeated ups and downs, the connections between industries and income generation, the interrelationships of trade, the mechanisms of market price establishment and income distribution, analysis of labor employment and unemployment, and even inflation, finance, banking, and the international economy.

経済学の中で最も基本的な問題を理論的に体系化したものを経済の純粋理論というのに対して，この純粋理論を個別の具体的な経済問題の分析および実際の経済現象の説明に適用する研究を行う領域を一般に応用経済学という。以上はきわめて厳密な応用経済学の定義である。しかし，通例の分類としての応用経済学とは，経済理論を現実の経済問題の解明に適用する学問であるとされている。　応用経済学の研究対象は，一国の経済の規模と構造が決定される仕組み，景気の上昇や停滞をくり返す景気変動の仕組み，産業間の結びつきと所得発生，貿易などの相互関連，市場価格の成立や所得分配の仕組み，労働雇用と失業の分析，さらにはインフレーション，財政，金融，国際経済などきわめて広範囲にわたっている。
