Ancient name: Vercellae. Capital of Vercelli Province, Piedmont, northwest Italy. Located about 60 km west-southwest of Milan, on the plain on the left bank of the upper Po River. In ancient times, it was inhabited by the Libicians. After the Roman occupation, military roads converged here, and theaters and amphitheaters were built. Nearby is the site of Hannibal's first victory in Italy in 218 BC. Currently, it is the center of a rice-growing region, famous for its rice market, and industries such as tableware, sugar refining, textiles, and shoemaking are also carried out. It is home to the Basilica of Sant'Andrea (1219-24), famous for the Vercelli Codex, and on the outskirts is the world-famous rice cultivation research institute. Population: 48,597 (1991 estimate).
